Why they show up and you don't

Why your competitor ranks higher than you

It is rarely that they are better at the work. It is usually that they have given search engines more to go on - more pages, more recent activity, more evidence they operate where the customer is standing.

The gap is pages

Not budget, not luck

They have more surface area, not more talent

The business above you probably has thirty or forty pages about specific jobs in specific places, and a site that changed this month. You have five pages that have not moved since launch. Same trade, same town, very different amount for a search engine to match against.

Closing a gap you can actually close

You cannot buy their domain age and you cannot undo their head start. What you can do is add specific pages faster than they do, starting with the jobs you finish this week. Drag the slider.

Four reasons they are above you

In most cases it comes down to these, in roughly this order. None of them require a bigger budget, though the first one takes time you cannot shortcut.

They have been there longer

An older site with years of accumulated links has an advantage you cannot buy. It is real, it is frustrating, and it is the one factor on this list you cannot do much about directly.

Their listing is in better shape

For local searches the Google Business Profile does much of the work. Complete details, the right categories, real photos, and steady reviews often matter more than the website does.

They have a page for the exact search

If someone types a specific job in a specific town and they have a page about that, and you have a page listing eight services, the match is not close.

Their site shows signs of life

Search engines revisit sites that change. One that has been identical for two years gives them no reason to come back and reassess it.

The part you can change this week

Domain age takes years. Reviews take months. Adding specific pages about real work is the fastest lever available to you, and it starts with the job you finish today.

1

Post the job you just did

The work, the place, one photo. Thirty seconds.

2

It becomes a page for that search

Aimed at the exact thing someone in that neighbourhood would type.

3

Repeat

Their forty pages took years. Yours accumulate at the rate you work.

Working out what is actually happening

Before assuming it is unfair, three checks that usually explain the gap.

Search the term and count their pages

Click through to the competitor who outranks you and look at how much is on their site. Count the pages about individual jobs or locations. That number, against yours, is usually the whole answer.

Compare the two Google listings side by side

Open both profiles. Check categories, photos, hours, review count and how recent the reviews are. For local searches this often explains more of the gap than either website does.

Check when each site last changed

Look for dated content on both. If theirs shows work from this month and yours shows nothing since launch, one of you is signalling an active business and one is not.

Out-publish them

You cannot age your domain overnight, but you finish jobs every week and most of your competitors are not posting them. That is the gap you can close.

Frequently asked questions

How long until I overtake them?

Nobody can honestly answer that, and be wary of anyone who does. What tends to happen first is that you start appearing for the narrow searches nobody has bothered to compete for. The broader, more contested terms take considerably longer and are not guaranteed.

They pay for ads. Should I?

Ads and organic results are separate, and paying for ads does not affect where you rank organically. Ads work while you pay for them and stop the day you stop. Whether that trade is worth it depends on your margins.

Is it because they hired an SEO agency?

Sometimes, though often it is simply that they have been around longer and post more. Before spending on an agency, it is worth doing the free things first: a complete Google listing, and specific pages about the work you actually do.

Can I report a competitor doing something dishonest?

If a Google Business Profile has a fake address or a business name stuffed with keywords, you can suggest an edit or report it, and those reports are sometimes acted on. It is worth doing if you are confident, but it is rarely the reason someone outranks you.

What happens after the 14-day trial?
